The 2018 Travel Photographer of the Year® awards are now open for entry. Amateur and professional photographers from across the globe and of all ages have until October 1st to submit their images to this long-established, renowned international competition at www.tpoty.com.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the competition – which was founded in 2003, is judged by a highly respected international panel of photographers and imaging experts and has attracted hundreds of thousands of images from photographers around the world – this year’s contest features a brand-new, eight-image ‘showcase’ portfolio category.

As well as outstanding exposure for their work, there are some fantastic prizes to be won by the overall winner of the awards – the Travel Photographer of the Year 2018 – and by the winners of the wide range of challenging themes and categories. Prizes include cash bursaries, the latest professional cameras and lenses from Fujifilm, Norwegian voyages with Hurtigruten, jackets from Páramo, personalised leather portfolio books or iFolios from Plastic Sandwich, Photo Iconic photo tuition, Genesis Imaging exhibition prints and membership of the Royal Photographic Society.

This year’s Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY®) portfolio categories are ‘Travel’ (eight images), ‘Faces, People, Cultures’ (four images) and ‘Natural World’ (four images). There are three single image One Shot categories, ‘Beauty of Light’, ‘Hot, Cold’ and ‘Tranquility’. The theme for the Young Travel Photographer of the Year award for ages 18 and under is ‘My Adventures’, while the New Talent theme (for amateur and semi-professional photographers) is ‘Festivals & Events’. Finally, for pictures taken on a smartphone or tablet, there is ‘iTravelled’.

The 2018 awards and prizes in detail
The Travel Photographer of the Year 2018 will be the photographer judged to have submitted the best eight images, either as an entry to the eight-image 'Travel' portfolio or as two portfolios in one or both of the four-image categories: ‘Faces, People, Cultures’ or ‘Natural World’. In addition to receiving the worldwide exposure that follows with this success, and seeing their images exhibited at TPOTY exhibitions in the UK and overseas, the Travel Photographer of the Year 2018 will receive £4,000, a personalized leather portfolio case or iFolio case from Plastic Sandwich, £750 worth of Páramo outdoor clothing and membership of the Royal Photographic Society.

The special 15th anniversary, portfolio, ‘Travel’, is the entrants’ chance to showcase their wide-ranging travel photography skills in a portfolio of eight images. The winner of this category receives the Fujifilm professional camera and lens of their choice, a trip for two to Norway - from Kirkenes to Bergen - with Hurtigruten, plus membership of the Royal Photographic Society.
The winners of the two, four-image portfolio categories ‘Faces, People, Cultures’ and ‘Natural World’ will each receive the Fujifilm professional camera and lens of their choice plus membership of the Royal Photographic Society. And the winners of the Best Single Image award in any of the three portfolio categories receive giclée exhibition prints from Genesis Imaging, who produce the prints for Travel Photographer of the Year.

For photographers who have one, stunning, image, there are three One Shot awards - ‘Beauty of Light’, ‘Hot, Cold’ and ‘Tranquility’. The winners of these categories will each receive a five or six-day winter or summer voyage for two people along Norway’s stunning coastline with Hurtigruten, plus a Torres Insulator or Halcon Traveller jacket from Páramo and membership of the Royal Photographic Society.

Since its foundation in 2003, Travel Photographer of the Year has always encouraged young photographic talent, and has given awards to youngsters from across the globe - with last year’s Young TPOTY titles all taken by Americans. The theme of this year’s Young TPOTY is ‘My Adventures’, and there are two age groups - 14 and under and 15-18 years. The overall young winner can come from either of these groups. The Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2018 wins £500, a personalised Plastic Sandwich leather portfolio book or iFolio, membership of the Royal Photographic Society and a place on a Photo Iconic photography workshop or online imaging critique session. The winners of the two age groups each receive £250 plus a place on a Photo Iconic photography workshop or imaging critique session.

From the start, Travel Photographer of the Year has also supported new talent - up and coming photographers who aim one day to turn professional. The 2018 New Talent award has the theme ‘Festivals & Events’. This six-image category is open to amateur and semi-professional photographers only. The winner will receive £500 plus a Páramo Halcon Traveller jacket, a personalized leather portfolio case or iFolio case from Plastic Sandwich, Photo Iconic photography tuition or critiques plus membership of the Royal Photographic Society.
