World Bank Armenia Photo Contest: 30 Years After Spitak

Commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Spitak Earthquake in Armenia

Located in one of the most seismically active regions of the world, Armenia is highly vulnerable to seismic risk, which has been exacerbated by rapid urbanization. A devastating example of this vulnerability was the December 7, 1988 Spitak earthquake, which affected 40% of the country: 514,000 people were left without shelter, 20,000 were injured and more than 25,000 killed, and economic losses were estimated at US$ 15-20 billion.

Much has changed in Armenia since then. In the lead up to the 30th Anniversary of the Spitak Earthquake, the World Bank and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) are inviting photographers from Armenia, and around the world, to participate in a photo contest dedicated to “Building Disaster Resilience Across Armenia”. The goal of the photo contest is to celebrate and pay tribute to the inspiring resilience of the Armenian people affected by the devastating 1988 Spitak Earthquake.
