Back for its fourth edition, Female in Focus is an international award that harnesses 1854’s global platform to champion the work of world-class women-identifying photographers.

Awareness around gender inequality in the industry may be growing. But the numbers aren’t changing fast enough. Globally, 70-80% of photography students are women — yet they account for only 13-15% of professional photographers.

Two winning stories and 20 single images will be exhibited as part of a group show in the US and UK (last year’s venue was at Green Space Miami in collaboration with WOPHA).

This year's edition is themed Home. Pairing with our upcoming British Journal of Photography print issue, themed Home, Female in Focus 2022 calls on photographers across the world to consider the many shapes and forms our sense of home can take, and how this may have evolved throughout the drastically changing landscape of recent years. Home as an object. Home as a community. Home as a state of mind.

Prizes:

20 images and two bodies of work will be exhibited in a group show. Previous venues include Artspace in New York City and Green Space Miami.

Get judged by industry leaders. Past years have included leading women from The New Yorker, Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA) and international galleries and publications.

Receive international press coverage. Past winners have been featured in Vogue Italia, The Guardian, The Times and more.

Winners will be invited to include their work in a dedicated NFT drop with our trusted partners, ART3.io.
