Judging all entries will be a panel of experts including Claudia Kenyatta, Director of Regions for Historic England, broadcaster and historian Dan Snow of History Hit TV, head of the television channel Sky HISTORY Dan Korn, award winning heritage photographer Matt Emmett, author and digital colourist Marina Amaral, Chairman of The Association for Historical and Fine Art Photography Kira Zumkley, and co-founder of Trip Historic Elli Lewis. The winners will be announced in November 2020.

Eligibility:

Entrants to the Historic Photographer of the Year Competition may be from anywhere in the world. All entrants to the Historic England category must be UK residents. All entrants must be aged 18 (eighteen) years or over and must not be employees of the Promoter, their families or anyone associated with the Competitions. Limited digital enhancements to the images are permitted, but these are restricted to cropping, sharpening, optimising, adjusting contrast and colour balance, HDR and minor retouching. Entrants are not permitted to manipulate the image in a way which would be likely to mislead or which would alter the nature of the image or subject. The Promoter reserves the right to reject anything they reasonably feel has been overly-manipulated or which distorts the integrity of the subject. Entries may be made using a camera, smartphone or tablet, digitally or using film. In all cases, files (or scans in the case of images on film) must be uploaded onto the Website. No print submissions will be accepted.

Copyrights & Usage Rights:

All images submitted must be the sole work of the individual submitting them and must not have been copied, must not contain any third party materials and/or content the entrant does not have permission to use, must not have been published elsewhere or have won a prize in any other photographic competition and must not otherwise be obscene, defamatory or in breach of any applicable legislation or regulations.

It is the responsibility of each entrant to ensure they have secured all relevant permits and/or provided all relevant information, including without limitation (a) in the case of human portraits, (i) obtaining the subject’s permission; (ii) respecting Applicable Data Protection Legislation and in particular ensuring that the individual is aware and has agreed as to how their Personal Data will be Processed (including providing them with a copy of the Trip Historic Privacy Policy); (iii) ensuring that no one featured has objected to being included; and (b) the landowner’s permission and any state permits as may be required are also obtained. All such permits, copies of information provided and evidence of permissions must be promptly provided to the Promoter upon request.

For the purposes of the provisions above Applicable Data Protection Legislation means (a) unless and until GDPR is no longer directly applicable in the UK, GDPR and any national implementing laws as amended from time to time; and (b) any successor legislation to GDPR or the Data Protection Act in the UK. The terms Processing and Personal Data are as defined in such Applicable Data Protection Legislation.

The entrants must ensure that any images they submit (a) do not infringe the copyright or other intellectual property right of any third party; and (b) comply fully with any applicable laws. By entering the Competition entrants warrant that the image they are submitting is their own work and they own the copyright in it. If the copyright or other intellectual property right of any third party has been infringed, the relevant entrant will indemnify the Promoter in respect of any third party claims. The entrant will also warrant that a copy of the Trip Historic Privacy Policy has been provided to any individuals featuring in their photographs and will indemnify the Promoter in respect of any loss or damage arising from any claim by an individual alleging that their personal data is contained in the entrant’s photographic submission and that their individual rights have been infringed.

Entries that do not fulfil the above criteria will be deemed ineligible and disqualified. Where this is discovered after the prize has been awarded, the prize (together with any travel expenses) must be returned or refunded by the entrant. Entrants agree to fully indemnify the Promoter in respect of any third party claims.

Copyright and moral rights in all images submitted for this Competition remain with the entrants. Notwithstanding this, in consideration of entering the Competition, each entrant agrees to grant the Promoter and the relevant Category Partner a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable, licence of intellectual property rights in the Competition entry and any accompanying materials (and otherwise arising in connection with the entry to which the entrant may now or at any time in the future be entitled under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 as amended from time to time and under all similar legislation from time to time in force anywhere in the world) for the Term, to use, display, publish, transmit, copy, edit, alter, store, re-format and sub-license the Competition entry and any accompanying materials for any purpose connected with the Competition, with a right to sublicense as necessary, such purposes to include without limitation:

Except in relation to the inclusion of any entries in books or calendars or associated publications authorised for publication within three years from the Closing Date in which case the Term is perpetual, in all other cases the Term shall be three (3) years from the Closing Date.
