International Garden Photographer of the Year is the world's premier competition for garden, plant and botanical photography, with a truly global reach.

With 8 categories to choose from, there is something for everyone – the competition is open to amateurs and professionals worldwide and you don’t need expensive camera equipment either – images from compact cameras and entry-level SLR cameras are all welcome.

Categories include:

  • Trees, Woods, Forests
  • Wildflower Landscapes
  • Greening the City

The IGPOTY exhibition - formed from the winners of the competition - tours the UK and worldwide, visiting iconic locations including Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, plus venues across Europe and venues as far afield as Sydney, Australia.

There are even a number of Special Awards, including New Shoots – open to photographers who have not previously entered the competition.

 

Prizes:

The overall winner of International Garden Photographer of the Year wins a £7,500 cash prize; there is also a prize for the best portfolio, the winner of which will take home £2000 plus a gold medal from The Royal Photographic Society.

Eligibility:

Photos must not be with a commercial image library or previously entered into competition.

Copyrights & Usage Rights:

10. COPYRIGHT AND PERMISSIONS

10.1 By submitting images to the Competition, you confirm and warrant that:

10.1.1 you are the sole author of each entry and that it is your original work;

10.1.2 you are the sole owner of the copyright in each image;

10.1.3 you have the permission of those pictured in the image (or, where the image shows any persons
under 18, the consent of their parent/guardian) for the usage rights required by International Garden Photographer of the Year and will indemnify International Garden Photographer of the Year against any claims made by any third parties in respect of such infringement;

10.1.4 you have not licensed or disposed of any rights in the image that would conflict with uses to be
made by International Garden Photographer of the Year;

10.1.5 you have received any necessary permissions from the owner(s) of property included in submitted
images for the usage rights required by International Garden Photographer of the Year;

10.1.6 you will be responsible for any claim by any third party in respect of your entry.

10.1.7 You agree not to use, or permit the use of, any images taken of or from National Trust sites for
any purpose other than entering this competition or your own personal use. You expressly agree not to
use such images for commercial purposes such as sale or license to third parties.

11. USAGE AND LICENCING OF SHORTLISTED PHOTOGRAPHS
11.1 If your image is NOT shortlisted it will be taken off-line within 48 hours of the end of the competition.
11.1 If your image is short-listed you will be contacted and invited to grant permission for your image to be used to promote the Competition and exhibition only. For avoidance of doubt, no free usage of any photograph is permitted by International Garden Photographer of the Year, or any of its partners or sponsors outside the scope of the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition and exhibition. There is no plan envisaged by International Garden Photographer of the Year, or any of its partners or sponsors, to create a general commercial archive of photographs entered into this competition.
Failure to agree to this licence will not disqualify any photograph from the competition.

This invitation will state as follows:

11.3.1 You grant International Garden Photographer of the Year and its supporting partners a non-exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free licence to reproduce, enlarge, publish or exhibit, on any media, the photographs for any purpose connected with the Competition. This may include, but is not limited to:
(a) inclusion on the Site and on the websites of sponsors and supporters;
(b) inclusion in associated books;
(c) display at any associated exhibitions;
(d) use in press releases to be distributed to national, regional & specialist press giving information
about or promoting the Competition.

11.3.2 You also agree that the organisers can sub-license images to the media for reproduction in
connection with the Competition and Exhibition only. International Garden Photographer of the Year will make every effort to ensure that name credits are given to any photograph published in any medium.

11.3.3 Images used on any merchandise commissioned by the organisers will be subject to separate
agreements which will be discussed individually with photographers.
