James Alan Cox Foundation for Student Photojournalists
Scholarships for Student Photojournalists
- Deadline: 15 November 2021
- Entry fee: Free
- Website: https://www.jamesalancoxfoundation.org/apply/
Focus of work and entries: PHOTOJOURNALISM. Scholarships will be awarded to those students whose work “tells a story”. This is a fairly broad topic and may include a variety of subject matter and approaches (breaking news, sporting events, etc.) Please keep in mind, for the still photography submissions, that we are NOT looking for “art” photography.
One suggestion, for subject matter, is the current crisis our world is facing: COVID-19. All of our lives have been changed by the Coronavirus. Much like 9/11 changed the lives of your parents, this event will change your world forever. You can show, through images or video, how COVID-19 has affected life in your school, your home, and your community. (In terms of still photography, you may submit individual images that stand alone or a series of photos.) Topics might include empty shelves in stores and empty classrooms, or health care workers bravely battling this virus. Stories might also focus on how you and your family are dealing with this pandemic – playing games, making meals together, and, of course, navigating the new educational system of distance learning. We urge you to go out and record the history that is being made all around you (and be sure to identify your photos by location and date).
Again, we are looking for photojournalism. We are asking you to do a lot with this application – write an essay and send us your transcript and recommendations – so if you are submitting still photos, please don’t ruin your chances of being considered by entering images of flowers, glamour shots or kittens – no matter how adorable they may be.
Jim Cox, a photojournalist for KTVK-3TV in Arizona, was killed in the media helicopter collision over Phoenix 14 years ago. This is our way of honoring him - a very talented man and beloved son, brother, and friend.
