Shining a Light International Photography Contest
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The Muhammad Ali Center is honored to announce the sixth annual “Shining a Light” International Photography Contest.
The goal of this year's competition is to reveal, but not exploit, women who have or currently live homeless and to educate our community about the issues, realities, and struggles they endure. The contest host will produce a documentary-style exhibition from 25 to 35 finalist photographs, which will be exhibited at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky beginning March 8, 2019.
CONTEST THEME
"Shining a Light: (The) Many Faces of Homeless Women"
Informed by the UNHCR and the Women’s Refugee Commission, the photographic submissions are asked to depict one or more of the following issues as they pertain to Refugee Women's lived experiences:
1. Gender-Based Violence
2. Livelihoods
3. Education
4. Rights and Justice
5. Sexual and Reproductive Health

National network of homeless persons, activists, and advocates, who work together “to prevent and end homelessness while ensuring the immediate needs of those experiencing homelessness are met and their civil rights protected.”

“Works to improve the lives of homeless women, youth and children by providing sanctuary, support, education, tools, and resources that empower them…”
The Ladybug Foundation, Inc.
“Supports efforts to spread awareness and raise funds to assist operating charitable organization which provide food, shelter, and other needs of people who are homeless and near homeless in Canada…”
Cardborigami, Inc.
“Carborigami’s mission is to provide instant space to protect people from the elements through innovation and design.”
The Empowerment Plan
“Focuses on permanently elevating families from the generational cycle of homelessness. We hire single parents from local shelters and provide them with training and full-time employment as seamstresses so that they can earn a stable income, find secure housing, and regain their independence.”

By submitting one or more photographs and participating in the “Shining a Light” photo contest, you agree to the following rules and the legal conditions:
· All photographers are welcomed; both amateur and professional.
· Photographers under the age of 18 are required to submit Parental Consent Form with their submission.
· You agree to your picture(s) and name being displayed by the Muhammad Ali Center, published and/or used on websites/webpages owned by the Muhammad Ali Center for an indefinite period of time.
· You agree to your picture(s) and name being displayed at other venues for an indefinite period of time.
· Participants retain ownership and all other rights to future use of their photographs, notwithstanding the rights granted above to the Muhammad Ali Center and other exhibition venues.
· The Muhammad Ali Center has the right to verify, at their sole judgment and discretion, winner eligibility.
· Participants warrant that their photographs:
o are original,
o have never been published in print or on the web,
o do not infringe on any third party’s rights,
o have obtained any and all necessary permissions from any third party that appears in the photograph. The Muhammad Ali Center would like to emphasize that any and all subjects/persons pictured in the photographs were made aware of being photographed AND consented to their pictures being taken.
· The Muhammad Ali Center reserves the right, at its own discretion and judgment, to disqualify any entry if it finds in its sole discretion that any of the conditions above are not met.
· All decisions by the Muhammad Ali Center and its judges concerning the photo contest are final and binding.

ABOUT SHINING A LIGHT
Leveraging its existing capacity to increase awareness around issues of human rights and social justice on local, national, and international stages, in 2013, the Muhammad Ali Center created “Shining a Light,” an international photography contest focused on gender equality. “Shining a Light” is an annual program and exhibition on display each March in conjunction with International Women’s Day.
