The Ian Parry Scholarship 2018

Over the past 28 successful years the scholarship has played an important role in keeping the values and traditions of photojournalism alive and well, by encouraging and supporting young emerging talent.

This year we are delighted to announce that a special exhibition and awards ceremony will take place outdoors at a prestigious site adjacent to Tower Bridge in London in October.

Following last year’s successful first round on line judging, we are extending the invitation beyond the Ian Parry Alum and are inviting many of the leading industry figures from around the world to take part.

This year there will again be two awards The Ian Parry Award for Achievement and The Ian Parry Award for Potential.

We are delighted to announce our guest judge this year will be Elisabeth Biondi.
Elisabeth is one of the most experienced and highly respected influencers in the industry. She was the Visuals Editor of The New Yorker for 15 years until she left in 2011 to work as an independent curator, writer, and teacher. A career that included her being Director of Photography at Vanity Fair and Geo Magazine in Germany.

We will also continue the year-long Mentorship Program for the winner of the Award for Potential which will be led by former Ian Parry Award recipient Marcus Bleasdale.

Marcus says, “I cannot overestimate how important winning the Ian Parry award was in starting my career. It was the beginning of everything. It is the most important award I have entered and one with the nicest people running it and sustaining it over the years. I am proud to be associated with Ian and his family. These friendships will sustain you throughout the years well after you enter. So, do it now!”

More about the Scholarship

Patron: Sir Don McCullin C.B.E.

Ian Parry was a photojournalist who died while on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. He was just 24 years of age.
Aidan Sullivan, then picture editor, and Ian’s friends and family created the Ian Parry Scholarship in order to build something positive from such a tragic death.
Each year we hold an international photographic competition for young photographers who are either attending a full-time photographic course or are under 24.

The Scholarship awards.
There are two awards, The Award for Achievement and the Award for Potential. The entry criteria for both will remain the same and the judges will make their decisions based on the individual merits of the entries. We will also continue the yearlong Mentorship Programme for the winner of the Award for Potential.

Entrants must submit a portfolio and a brief and clear proposal of a project they would undertake if they won the scholarship.

There is no fee for entry.
