About

The state of European relations is on thin ice resulting in an era of widespread change socially, politically and culturally. This open call is for photographic work of all mediums that seek to illuminate the character of Europe and the people who live in the diverse and ever-changing countries that make up the continent.

What winners receive

There will be three winners selected overall, each for individual recognition in either the Portrait Prize (single image), Landscape Prize (single image) or Best Series (5 images). Each to receive a cash prize of £500.

Winning entrants will also gain recognition in an upcoming publication which will be disclosed at a later date.

Runners up may also be named and or commended for work that was not selected as a winning entry but was found to be outstanding in quality by the judges. However this does not include any formal prize and will be shared to promote the competition if permission is given by the photographer.

About Photographique

Photographique opened in Bristol, UK in early 2008 with the aim of providing a professional and personal experience for photographers. An independent lab to get film developed and high quality prints made. 10 years on we have moved locations and changed our look but our passion for film photography and photographic processes is stronger than ever! With the evolution of the company we have built up a community of student, professional and amateur photographers internationally.

How to enter

Entrants can enter up to 5 images, these photographs will be judged as a whole as well as individually. Images can be from a single series or multiple series.

Judging criteria

Working with The Martin Parr Foundation, Photographique will be judging submitted work on a number of relevant criteria. Most importantly we are looking for images that we feel strongly reflect the personality of Europe, this can also be alongside a coherent theme or narrative relevant to the subject of Europe or any subject the photographer can justify is of significant suitability to the open call. Work will also be judged on technical ability and presentation, however we are not looking for specific styles/methodologies/mediums used to create the work.

We also require a minimum of 200 words to accompany each submitted image or body of work to provide judges with enough context for which to judge the work entered.

Please note: Entrants do not have to be native to Europe and can be of any level of photographic experience, student/amateur/professional.

The Martin Parr Foundation

Renowned British photographer Martin Parr opened the Foundation in 2017 to to hone in on British and Irish photographers, as well as work taken in the British Isles by others, and put the focus on their documentary work – an area which he believes is still underrated.

THE FOUNDATION SUPPORTS AND PRESERVES THE LEGACY OF PHOTOGRAPHERS WHO MADE, AND CONTINUE TO MAKE, IMPORTANT WORK FOCUSED ON THE BRITISH ISLES.

THE FOUNDATION HAS THREE AIMS: Preserve the archive and legacy of Martin Parr, one of the most significant documentary photographers of post war Britain. Hold a growing collection of works by selected British and Irish photographers as well as images taken in the British Isles by international photographers. House an expanding library of British and Irish photo-books.

Eligibility:

Entrants do not have to be native to Europe and can be of any level of photographic experience, student/amateur/professional.

Copyrights & Usage Rights:

1-5 images. These can be images from a single series, multiple series or a selected individual image.
Entry fee of €28 (£25) covers a submission of up to 5 images.
Entrants can submit multiple submissions, these will have to be entered in separate submissions/projects and will therefore incur €28 (£25) per entry.
Entrants must be aged 18 and over.
Artist/series statement, no longer than 300 words.
All images submitted must be with intent to adhere to the competition requirements and theme. We cannot accept any responsibility for work that is submitted without relevance or that which out of the guidelines of the competition.
We accept that there may be some digital post-processing on images, this will be investigated on an individual basis if necessary. Please note we may require original files/negatives/prints if you are one of the photographers shortlisted or selected.
Please ensure files submitted are prepared as follows;
8.1 Jpeg format
8.2 sRGB colour profile
8.3 Image size: min. 1500px on the long side

Submissions made must be from the sole owner of the image. To reproduce photographic images without the permission of the photographer is a breach of copyright rules. We accept submitted images on a basis of trust and must assume permission is implicit.
While copyright of all work submitted for this award remains with the respective entrants, the entrant grants to Photographique a license to reproduce representative examples of the submitted entries in any of their publications, websites, and/or in any promotional material, strictly in connection with the award, and with reference to the photographer/artist.

Competition details

Submissions will be accepted until 05/07/2019 12:00AM. 1.1 If a decision is made to extend the submission period this will be announced online.
A shortlist of finalists will be announced in July 2019.
Selected photographers will be chosen as the winners of EUROPA (The European Photoawards) on the 31/07/2019. This date may be subject to change.
